Mi-Pac

I have needed a new bag for a while now, the broken zip on my old one pops open sporadically and I’m always worried I am going to get to work and find I’ve lost all my belongings – especially now I’m cycling most days. I’ve neglected getting a new one for so long because a bag is something you use on a day to day basis, you take it everywhere – and for me it’s been hard to find a bag I like, meets my needs and doesn’t cost the earth.

This one’s from Mi-Pac, part of their ‘Gold Range’. It’s a good size, quite compact and as well as the front pocket it has an internal padded laptop sleeve which is really useful. I went for the Neoprene affect black rucksack, that, whilst quite subtle, is a little more exciting than my usual plain black canvas bag. Plus it’s more waterproof for a rainy commute, it’s got padded straps and feels durable. Anyway, I thought I would use this opportunity to show you what I lug around with me on a day to day basis – excluding all the receipts, tissues and the other detritus that usually lingers at the bottom.

Let’s start with my Kindle, aside from my camera and hardrive this is possible the most important thing in my bag. It literally comes everywhere with me! It was a gift from my parents a few years back and initially I wasn’t so keen. I was all about paper books with real tangible pages, but now I use it every single day – and whilst I do feel bad that I’m contributing to the downfall of the book shop industry, It’s super light and so much easier to carry around than a hardback. I read fantasy books mainly; there’s nothing better than nipping out of the studio at lunch to spend half an hour sitting by the canal and zoning out. I’m also not the best sleeper; I can easily lie awake for hours dwelling on the days events or stressing about something or other, and usually fantasy is so far detached from reality that it really helps me switch off and unwind before bed.

Aside from reading I quite often like to listen to podcasts whilst I’m working and so that’s where the Urbanears Headphones come into play. You just can’t beat a decent pair of headphones, these have a microphone attached, allowing me to multitask whilst I’m on the phone. They even have a second earphone point for your mates to plug in their own headphones and share what you’re listening to!

The Diary was a gift from B for Christmas; I am terrible with keeping myself organised and this was a last ditch attempt to help. It’s from Leuchtturm, and as you can see has my name embossed and foiled on the front. I mainly use it to keep track of birthdays, work dates etc, but I must say I do need to update it a little more regularly. The brass pen is from HAY – I love a bit of nice stationery.

I’m pretty into my skincare, and I always make sure I carry some moisturiser with me, especially through the summer months. I’ve been using Khiels Blue Herbal Moisturiser for a couple of years now, it’s not too heavy and is made from all natural ingredients – which sits well with my relatively sensitive and oily skin. The Murdocks Matte Putty is something I’ve only recently started using, it has a great hold and doesn’t make your hair look too greasy like most putty or gum products.

Fortunately for me B is a graphic designer and so there’s always new and interesting magazines in the house that I’m able to pinch once he’s finished reading. It’s pretty hit and miss to be honest, sometimes they’re not quite my cup of tea, but I’m enjoying this one so far. It’s the latest edition of the Lobby, a biannual Architecture magazine, this ones called the ‘Abundance” issue (#4), aside from it being a beautiful publication it’s a pretty good read if your interested in that kind of thing.

Finally, the latest addition to my bag are my Ace & Tate sunglasses. I don’t often wear sunglasses; I have quite a small head and so I struggle to find a pair that suit me, but I absolutely love these. I went for a light/trim frame, with a really simple shape which should hopefully last me a couple of years. They’re designed in Amsterdam; the ethos of the company is to provide well made and beautifully designed eyewear which is durable and affordable at he same time –  they can also fit them with prescription lenses if you ask.

What are your daily travel companions?

As always, thanks for reading.

I’m currently on the back pack hunt. I’ve seen these guys in a couple of shops, this one looks really nice solid choice. Also lobby is awesome.

Thanks man, I thought I would branch out a bit and go for something other than black canvas as I always seem to do.
