Style it Simple – Stripes

25th April 2016

I’m sure it’s the same for everyone, but the first hour of every day for me definitely isn’t my finest. I set my alarms to go off every 5 minutes from 6:45am and it’s not until B has shaken me awake after snoozing through about 6 of them that I eventually roll out of bed, realising I now only have 15-20 minutes to shower, make some lunch and leave for work. Consequently this leaves me zero time to dither over what I’m going to wear. I would absolutely love to be able to spend 20 minutes every morning choosing my day’s outfit, but in reality I (and I’m sure I’m not alone in this) will always choose to have that extra half hour in bed. And so for me it’s so important to have a rotation of outfits, which I know work pretty well, ones I can just chuck on when I’m rushing franticly to catch my train. For me, stripes seem to work perfectly!

I know horizontal striped tops are hardly a ground-breaking style choice, but aside from the fact that they make you look broader, they are just so easy to wear. And so I thought I would share with you my favourite, if not quite so innovative, go to, day to day outfit. It’s simple really: black bottoms and shoes, chuck on a bold stripe, and if the stripes are monochrome then just jazz it up with a pair of brightly coloured socks – done!

Now I have so many stripped tops – most of them from COS (who release a cracking selection nearly every season) – and every pay check I seem to add another to my collection. I have a couple that are so similar, that to the untrained/uninterested eye, they look exactly the same, but for me I appreciate the attention to detail offered by that slight difference in thickness or spacing. There’s not much you can get wrong when choosing the right top, but I would always go for clean sharp lines, with strong black or navy stripes; try to avoid anything with blurred, uneven lines and go for block bold colours. Nothing faded or too washed out either.

At work, I can get away with wearing pretty much anything other than trackies, but in my building there’s lots of people that come in suited and booted on a daily basis too. Whilst I do generally enjoy dressing the smart side of casual, I definitely don’t want to start wearing a shirt everyday. I will always choose a tee over a collared shirt, and its not always easy to look smart whilst wearing one. This is where stripes come into play! For comfort, going for a striped tee is no different to wearing a plain white one, but the stripes give it structure and therefore make it smarter, which is why it’s important to avoid blurred or washed out lines. Team it with a pair of black jeans and brogues and there you have a smart but comfy outfit, which takes all of 2 seconds to put together.

What’s everyone else’s go-to, reliable outfit?

The Striped Top from COS, the bottoms are a standard pair of Slim-leg Black Jeans from Topman, the Watch is a Weekender Fairfield from Timex, the Socks from Uniqlo and finally the Monogram Brogues are from G.H.Bass

    Hi Aaron

I loved reading this post I totally agree with you mornings are so hard for me too, and I am always running late because I am struggling with what to wear. I really love the striped top with bright sock combo as well. Good Job!
