Last week B and I met for lunch at the Rochelle Canteen, I’d never been before but knew a few people who had and decided to give it a try. This place truly feels like a secret supper club; located at the Rochelle School on Arnold Circus in Shoreditch, set back from the road and hidden away within a walled garden, the only sign of it being there was a tiny A-board, propped up outside the gate. B and I booked ahead and arrived at 2pm on a Friday afternoon, after ringing the buzzer to get in we were shown to our table within a couple of minutes, and were seated outside, next to a large banquet table of a party of around 20 people.
Although slightly pricey for lunch it is BYO, and the menu looked amazing. Initially we were after the Roast Chicken, Green Bean & Watercress Salad, but they had sold out, so instead we went for the Braised Rabbit, Girolles (Wild Mushrooms) & Coco Beans and a Courgette, Tomato & Goats Cheese Salad, with Sourdough Bread & Olives to start. The food was spot on, the rabbit literally fell away from the bone, and the courgettes tasted amazing. We shared both dishes, and could have gone on to desserts had we not been in a rush – the Nectarine Jelly and the Cheery & Almond Tart looked incredible.
Over all it gets a massive thumbs up from me. The Hospitality was great, they even seemed to provide sun hats on request for those who are a little more sensitive to the heat than myself. And although we were in and out pretty quickly, the setting and atmosphere is idyllic – it felt like the sort of place you could sit and slowly sip a glass of vino and catch-up with friends. If you are ever in the area, hungry and the sun’s out, then I would definitely give it a go.
