I’ve known about this mystical place for a while, but until now have never plucked myself out of bed early enough to head down and investigate. The New Covent Garden Flower Market, is only a short stroll from Vauxhall station, and well worth a trip down. It’s open 4am to 10am Monday to Friday, and is more of a traders market – apparently the majority of London’s florists buy from here. I got there at about 7:30am on a Tuesday morning, and things already seemed to be winding down, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to find so many amazingly tacky Christmas decorations – hence why I thought I’d save this post until now. The 6 foot Polar bears and the fluffy owls were my favourites, but they had so many different baubles and wreaths – it was amazing!
I went with the intention of finding a nice hanging plant for the bathroom, and I was definitely spoilt for choice. I absolutely love heading down to Columbia Road Flower Market on a Sunday, but there’s no beating NCGFM when it comes to the variety of plants – and it is all dirt cheap. They have all sorts potted or cut from succulents to Fig Trees, Fly-Traps to Tulips. I did feel a bit awkward only buying the one plant, when everyone else was having them buy the dozen, but they didn’t really seem to mind too much. If your ever in the need for some serious early morning botanical therapy this is the place to go.
